Waratah Super Battery: EOI Process Now Under Way

As we have previously discussed (read here), the New South Wales Government is advancing its plan to build the “biggest network battery in the southern hemisphere” by 2025 as it looks to shore up a reliable energy supply ahead of the impending closure of the coal-fired Eraring Power Station.

The EOI document for the Waratah Super Battery was released on Monday 4 April. The Waratah Super Battery will be the largest standby network battery in the Southern Hemisphere and together with other minor transmission upgrades, will allow Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong consumers to access more energy from existing electricity generation.

Applicants now have until 4pm on 2 May 2022 to submit their EOIs to EnergyCo. Other key dates in the process are as follows:

  • June 2022│Invitation to Tender (ITT)
  • Late July 2022 │ Tender Closing Date
  • Late 2022 │Enter into Applicable Contract(s)
  • As early as Q4 2024│ In-Service Date
